Issey Miyake - A Piece Of Cloth

Issey miyake is one of the most innovative designers in Fashion History.
He build an iconic career challenging society's conception of fashion.
Miyake approached fashion in a different way,, he used to focus on the fabric first, then build  the design based on the fabric characteristics.
Most of Issey Miyake’s work is pure innovation , during his career he build many groundbreaking moments with his lines and concepts.
This time we’re talking about one specific concept that its genius is often forgotten, even though it is one of the core concepts of Issey Miyake:
A Piece of Cloth or A-POC for short.
The concept A-POC was first introduced in 1997 by Issey  Miyake and Dai Fujiwara
that same year Miyake left his position as creative director of his namesake label.
Issey Miyake introduced his APOC, or "A Piece of Cloth," Designed to highlight the two dimensional quality of cloth and to minimize waste,
APOC garments were produced in machine made rolls of knit fabric pre-sewn or fused with finished patterns. The user cut the pattern from the roll to create a ready-made, customized garment.
This complete, cut APOC ensemble in red knit includes a top, a bra, a skirt, briefs, socks, mittens, armbands, a cap, and a handbag.

This concept really shows the true intentions behind Miyake’s work , while other brands and designers are making  their product to be “exclusive” or “luxurious”

Miyake proved to the world how important and valuable is for a product to be useful  and sustainable without losing the style component to it .
This concept brings a new idea of waste reduction,  nowadays we see “environmental protection “ propaganda almost in every brand, but taking it back to the 90’s and early 00’s , that concept was not visible and It was easy to be outcompeted by brands that just focused on style and quality
